EVO'wned 2008
And so another EVO hath passed. Despite all the setbacks and the gross miscommunication about registration, it was a good time. Lots of fighters were played, asses were kicked (including my own), and fun was had by all.
We got to check out some Street Fighter IV, and I must say it's a ton of fun to play. The graphics and animation are smooth, everyone was balanced for the most part (El Fuerte felt kind of weak), and the controls were responsive. If you guys see SF IV in an arcade or have a next gen console, definitely check it out.
Tatsunoko vs. Capcom was a bit of a letdown. I wanted to jump in line to play, but the same guys kept going over an over. However, after watching a few matches, I realized that it was very unbalanced. Ryu and Chun-Li are horrendously overpowered with easy combos/supers, and the killing blow was the absence of Ken the Eagle from Gatchaman (you know, G-Force, Battle of the Planets, etc.). Whether that was intentional or not is still unknown, but it's odd since he's in all of the promotional game videos. I'm seriously hoping this game gets tweaked, because it looks stunning visually. And the Nana wants her Gatchaman fighters!
On our side of things, that is, the SNK section, we had several Neo Geo games running. Everything from Matrimelee to Samurai Shodown to KoF Ultimate Match received lots of attention. I tried my hand in a NeoWave tournament and got booted out by a Young Geese. Eh, at least I gave the guy a run for his money... even though the tourney was free. XD
Sadly, I didn't get to play BlazBlue, but from what I saw, it looks very pretty and GG-esque. Wish I coulda spent some time with it. :(
A rare Tatsunoko vs. Capcom matchup. This was one of the few matches I saw where most of the charas used were from the Tatsu side. It's Cassern (Casshan)/Hurricane Polymar vs. Yatterman No. 1/Ryu.

George's Hamaba-chans getting some love.

Zangief and El Fuerte promotional posters.

Battle Fantasia. This and BlazBlue were playable for about an hour before they brought in SC IV and MK II. Laaaaame.

Solid Snake in Smash Bros. Brawl. This game looks funny on high level play.

Random pics of the crowd from the SNK homebrew section.

This is the crowd Marvel vs. Capcom 2 draws. Yes. It's STILL popular. :|

Some SF IV piccage. That's my buddy Todd playing a few rounds in the second pic.

I want this shirt.

A few gamers throwing down on Rumble Fish. The cab is a refurbished one courtesy of Dinodoedoe.

Japanese gamer Kindebu. He's an EVO regular and can play a mean CvS2. Hopefully I won't get lynched for posting this. XD

BlazBlue. This needed more attention, but it only stayed on for a short while.

A Kazuki player that isn't me! <333

Todd and I going head to head in SamSho V/Zero. This was mainly taken for
arrshley.
With EVO 2008 behind me, it's time to plan for 2009. I've been wanting to host at least two tournaments, but now I want to add to that. As my goal for next EVO, I want to run:
-A low-tier only Marvel vs. Capcom 2 tournament. I think this would be far more entertaining than the usual high-level play.
-An all-female tournament. The game of choice is still up in the air, but I was thinking Guilty Gear. There were more girls at this one than at earlier cons, so I'm hopeful about it.
-A Jojo's tournament. Of course, I still need to hunt down a copy of the game, but I think this would be a fun and whimsical tourney. Just beware that Vanilla Ice.
That's all for this year's EVO report. See ya next year! <3

What I always dreamed of is the wondrous tourney of chance!
Everyone must place their favorite and best fighter on a piece of paper and placed into a hat. Then a total of five games are chosen. Then when you play the randomly picked games, you are forced to use the "random rule". Pick your character via the random character select screen.
The winner of the tourney will be the victory only because he/she can adapt with whatever the crappy character throws at him/her or just because of dumb luck. Best 2 out of three to make the odds fairer.
That's my dream.
