Touhou 13: Ten Desires (preliminary thoughts)

While I wait for my friends to pick me up, I decided to check out ZUN's latest Touhou installment. It was the demo, so I got a glimpse of the first 3 stages and two new characters.

You get your choice of the usual protagonists Reimu and Marisa along with Sanae (the wind priestess who was also playable in UFO) and Youmu (a half-ghost guardian). Each girl has her own attack that gains power in a similar way to UFO, but there are new additions to the gameplay. You can collect these little spirit orbs that can add points, pieces that can lead to extra lives or Trance/Bombs.

When you're hit, the trance meter kicks in and you can keep fighting for a short period of time, although you can activate it without being hit by pressing C. It's kind of confusing and I'm still getting used to it.

Also, focusing with Youmu is a bit different as she can charge and release a slash attack as opposed to focusing her shot.

The story is based in Buddhism, but the theme seems to be about the underworld and spirits. You start off against Yuyuko (the final boss of Perfect Cherry Blossom), who is the first boss you will face. Not too bad a fight, but I played on easy.

The second stage kicks it up considerably, and this is where I ran into trouble. The music cut out in the middle of the stage, so I didn't get to hear the stage 2 boss theme. But the boss herself is Kyouko Kasodani, a sound-based youkai. I really like the concept of her attacks. She has a lot of mind games as well as bouncing danmaku. Her design is simple, but cute.

I failed so hard at stage 3. I did manage to clear it, but it gets cluttered at times. But the boss totally makes up for it. Sure, you have Kogasa as your midboss. Then your boss... Your boss...

YOUR BOSS IS A JIANG SHI!!!!!11111

Ahem, that is, your boss is Yoshika Miyako. She's a Jiang Shi/Kyonshi, or a Chinese hopping vampire. Her hands are even sticking out like one and has a little paper seal on her forehead! Oh, and her attacks are pretty mean for easy mode. Sadly, I couldn't hear her stage music or theme song. Hopefully I'll be able to once the kinks are worked out.

Final thoughts? I like the mood so far and the music is decent. Methinks I will check it out again when it's fully developed and ready to go.
