This essay is not for the weak of gaming. And that's all the warning you get.
Today I realized something.
While I was waiting on my late bus I was chatting with a security guard from the Hard Rock. He was there for a while before I left, so we recognized one another. We got to talking about the cause of Peter Morton's decision to sell the Hard Rock Hotel. There's been tons of rumors floating around, one being that his seven million dollar loss was caused by an inside job. His theory proved to be much more unbeliveable to downright immature.
Morton sold the Hotel because he lost one investor on his condo project. One. One single investor. He sold a good 90% of it, and he gets into a fit over that.
What does this have to do with Midgar? I'm getting to that.
The Morgan group bought the Hard Rock along with the Cafe and the apartment complex behind the hotel. The security guard said that most of the tenants have been evicted and the ones remaining are mostly drug dealers. That complex used to be a nice place to live, but ever since the threat of tearing it down came about it fell into the toilet.
It began to remind me of when Cloud and co. are riding the train through the slums of Midgar. The rich and powerful lived above, and the poor were below. Vegas is becoming like that. The rich are being drawn to the hi-rise condos, the poorer areas are being torn down for luxurious homes. And while the rich are buying all these up, the poor folk and even the middle class locals are being left out in the cold.
Another bit that came up with me is the city's water consumption. Lake Mead is lowering every year. Kinda like how Shin-Ra drained the world in order to make mako energy. Look what happened there. Shin-Ra literally harvested the planet's energy, only to have it backfire on them in the end. Diamond Weapon came up and nailed the city with all these attacks before dying. Granted, Weapon won't come and attack Vegas like Midgar, but Vegas is draining the water just like them. I heard the city was considering tapping other places for water once we run out. What's next? Draining other cities of their water?
Don't get me wrong, I love Las Vegas to death. But it's stuff like this that makes me wonder if I should stay put for the next several years. I don't want to leave, but if we run out of water I have no idea what I'd do.
I just don't want for Vegas to end up like Midgar.
