EVO'WNED! (EVO 2K6 news)

I'm currently recovering from EVO 2006, and I have to say this year was a a bigger blast than last year.

Friday kicked off uber early. I got up at 11pm on the 17th, only to stay up until 11pm the 18th. Dash no Chris wanted to get there early so we could hook up his AES systems and import PS2. But thanks to our early arrival we had a decent play area with plenty of curious gamers eager to try out the Neo Geo equipment. One gamer had never been so close to an AES system before, so he was pleased.

My MvC2 tourney went well. I lost, but I didn't get my ass handed back to me. I took out a couple of my opponents' characters, but in the end it wasn't quite enough. The guys I played against were friendly and treated me as an equal.

In GGXX we once again lost. The first loss was to a Chipp, the second to an Order Sol. Why did it have to be a Chipp to best me again?? ;___; At least I gave the Order Sol a run for his money. I could hear the gasps when we went down to the wire in the second round.

Not bad for a first day. :3

Saturday - Again an early day. We snagged 4 TVs for Dash no Chris's import PS2 and my PS2 with a burned copy of GGXXslash. Needless to say my PS2 got a helluva workout after I practiced for a while. We ran all sorts of games like KoF XI, MOTW, Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi, and KoF: MI2.

That was also the night of the $3,000 MvC2 matchup. You read that right. It was two players doing a money match, East Coast vs. West Coast. The rules were simple: race to seven wins. The East took it 7 games to 4. Not bad, but still rather boring since MvC players use the usual Magneto/Cable/Storm/Sentinel/Psylocke teams. There was a Spiral and Capt. Commando in there somewhere too...

Sunday - We debuted our Cigar Box cabinet. It's big, black, and awesome. For those who don't know what a cigar box is, it's a type of arcade cab of the homebrew variety. I have pics, but I'm at work so I can't upload them. It got quite a bit of attention before we had to pull the plug in favor of the finals.

GGXXSlash: An Eddie/Testament/Bridget team took the victory over an Eddie/Faust/Sol team. It was worth watching Testament ass rape Sol for the win.

Capcom vs. SNK 2: I think Justin Wong won this one (one of like 4 of his victories) with an A-Groove Vega/Sakura/Blanka team (or was it Sagat? I forget). Yawn. Yeah, the CvS2 tournies tend to be boring for the same reason MvC2 is boring: No Variety! But! There was a player by the name of Buktooth who surprised most of the players. He used an N-Groove Hibiki/Morrigan/Iori. His appearance in the finals made the tournament for me.

Tekken/DoA4: I didn't really pay attention to either of these since I blinked and they were over. But for Tempest's sake I made sure to watch the DoA finals. Hayate took the victory over Hayabusa.

MvC2: Same old stuff since last year. Moving along...

SFIII: Okay, these matches really got under my skin. Granted, there was an awesome Oro player somewhere, but the rest of the competition consisted of 85-90% Yun players. No joke. The highlight was when two Japanese players went head to head and one pulled the plug on his controller. The crowd went nuts. It was badass to say the least.

And that was EVO2006 in a nutshell. I cannot wait for next year. :D
